Democracy in the UK, What Democracy?
Yesterday 5th March 2008 saw the confirmation that we no longer have democracy in the UK. As expected there will be no referendum on the new European Treaty. Some, especially Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, say that it does not create a new constitution and therefore no referendum is required. All parties had promised a referendum on what was the EU Constitutional Treaty. It has been ammended following referendum defeats in some other European Countries and is now the Lisbon Treaty. How far it has changed is a matter for debate but it is a transfer of power to Europe. The votes of the MPs have been cast and counted. A noble few stood against their party line but hundreds should hang their heads in shame. But their careers mean more than their principles. Some may say it will all blow over and we shall see it was insignificant change. Even if that were to pass, the Politicians are acting against the wishes of majority of the public and they know it. That is serious in any society. That is not democracy. And should this be the birth of a European Super State, do the MPs not see the irony in their votes? The UK electorate have been refused their voice and in Westminster the politicians may have voted to lose theirs too. The clear snd obvious reason that there will be no referendum is that those in power know they would lose if there were.
