Classic Songs used in TV Adverts & Commercials
I appreciate that music helps sell product and that advertisers are keen to use it but I think it demeans some of our classic tunes and songs. I have, for example, just heard in the background the classic Albatross by Fleetwood Mac whilst a soft voice tried to sell me some chocolate from a well known supermarket. No doubt the product is good and the music is definitately good. But I want to associate that music with the time I was looking down over a windswept mountain landscape in Scotland. Now my brain has another association too..chocolate pudding! The Beatles (or Paul now) as far as I know, has refused to allow their music to be used in such a way and I commend him for it. Others (not Fleetwood Mac neccessarily) either need/want the money or the exposure at any cost. It's fine to use the mediocre songs and tunes. They are OK for advertising but the day I hear "Stairway to Heaven" in a funeral director's commercial, I will kill myself! |
